Why Fairies?

"Gods, Heroes, and Myths." N.p., n.d. Web. 14 Nov. 2012. JPEG file.

I've been very interested about the different types of fairies ever since we explored the subject in our classroom. Growing up I was always taught that fairies were pretty, graceful, and innocent. Peter Pan and Tinkerbell were the model fairies that I learned about first, so any fairies that I came across after them were stereotyped with their characteristics. Boy, after studying the different types of fairies I would soon be proven that there was more than just your average Tinkerbell to be learned about. The word "fairy" comes from the older word "fay" which means mythical creature or magical being. Fairies were often characterized as having supernatural powers, including goblins or gnomes. Their appearances differ with some having human like features with wings or wizened-faces, others ugly, short, and even appearing as trolls. The fairies that I have been studying the most that have caught my attention are the fairies that go by the names of Dullahan, Banshee, Leprechaun, and Brownie. Hopefully my blog informs you on my new-found interests.
